This section presents an outline of some of the notions that are relevant in the discussions of particular aspects of the grammar. Many of the issues considered here are interrelated and, therefore, each cannot easily be discussed independently in a logical sequence. For this reason, the aim of this preliminary section is to give a brief account of some significant concepts and to introduce much of the terminology that will be needed in the rest of this grammar. This will form a basis for the more detailed discussion in later sections.
